FIFA has opened disciplinary cases against the football federations of Argentina and Brazil following fan violence that delayed the start of their World Cup qualifying match at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

The Argentine federation has been charged with crowd disturbances and the late kick-off of the match, while the Brazilian federation has been charged with failures to manage security at a game it organized.

Fights among fans broke out after the national anthems were played, forcing the teams to be led back to the locker rooms. The match eventually started 27 minutes late.

Argentina won the game 1-0, but the violence overshadowed the result. FIFA has not yet announced a timetable for judging the case or imposing sanctions.

The next World Cup qualifying games for both teams are in September. Brazil will host Ecuador, while Argentina will host Chile. The two teams could meet again at the 2024 Copa America, which will be played in the United States from June 20 to July 14.
