Joe Root’s dismissal against the Netherlands in the Cricket World Cup 2023 was one for the ages, but not for the reasons he would have liked. The England batter was bowled in a bizarre fashion by Dutch bowler Logan van Beek in their World Cup encounter in Pune.
The incident took place during the 21st over of the match when Root attempted his usual reverse hit but got nutmegged as the ball went past and cleaned up his stumps.
Van Beek bowled a length delivery and Root got himself in an awkward position while trying to hit the ball over third man who was positioned in the inner circle. However, Root could not make any contact with the ball, due to the low bounce, and the ball went past his legs and crashed on to the stumps.
Root’s dismissal was a major blow for England, who were chasing a modest target of 245. The England batter had been in good form in the tournament, scoring two fifties in the previous three matches.
England eventually won the match by six wickets, but Root’s dismissal will be one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament.
