Brighton & Hove Albion secured their biggest Premier League victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers with a 6-0 win on Saturday, thanks to an impressive performance from Deniz Undav, Pascal Gross, and Danny Welbeck. The Seagulls bounced back after a tough week where they were defeated by Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals and lost to struggling Nottingham Forest in the league.
The game started with a bang as Undav opened the scoring in the sixth minute, guided by a cheeky backheel from Welbeck. Gross then doubled the home team’s lead seven minutes later, sidefooting a cross from Julio Enciso into the roof of the net. Gross continued his impressive form, volleying Brighton’s third goal in the 26th minute from another assist by Enciso.
Welbeck scored two goals, killing off any hopes of a Wolves comeback, with his first goal coming in the 39th minute as he outjumped Maximilian Kilman at the back post to head home Pervis Estupinan’s cross. He then scored again three minutes after halftime from just outside the box. The icing on the cake was a sixth goal from Undav in the 66th minute after Sa played a poor ball to Matheus Nunes, allowing the German to steal the ball and chip the keeper to secure Wolves’ heaviest defeat of the season.
The victory helped Brighton stay firmly in the race for Europe, with the Seagulls currently sitting in eighth place, only a point behind seventh-placed Liverpool with a game in hand. They are also two points behind Aston Villa in sixth spot and fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have both played two games more.
Manager Roberto de Zerbi expressed his delight at the team’s performance, saying, “I think we deserve to achieve our target, Europe, but we shall see. We can achieve. The most important thing is not to lose our DNA and style.” The win keeps Brighton’s European hopes alive and gives them the confidence to continue their pursuit of a top-six finish in the Premier League.
